Play a decent entry in the free to play MMORPG genre

Cabal 2 is the sequel to the first Cabal, surprise, surprise and was published out of South Korea. Its a decent execution for a fantasy based MMORPG, except that it was put out in South Korea in 2012 and only made it's way back to the America's and broader audiences until recently in 2015. This is a huge problem in that the game really didn't keep up with the times and many of the features that were distinctive and interesting in 2012 are just the same old, same old when compared to modern games. Cabal 2 isn't a bad game, per say, and it does some things really well. It's only problem that for the market it's entering, its a little too late to the game.

Game Play

Cabal 2 plays like many other MMO's that you're used to. Create a character, select from several different classes and races and then set out playing through the story quests and side quests, gathering loot and experience to expand your skills. All the familiar elements are present in combat although there are some additional components like combos and finishing moves that reward a player with fast reflexes and some skill in positioning. Quests are received from NPC's and mostly consist of someone in one area asking you to kill a number of something else or gather a number of something in a different area. It's a tired system that leads the player through levels and gets them prepared for stronger opponents and boss battles. Gear is looted from fallen enemies and in a nice touch, color coded smoke rises from corpses indicating how good the equipment available is. There's nice touches, but there's nothing new.

Presentation

Cabal 2 looks fine and there are some really cool animations when it comes to different movements. NPC's are very well done and well acted with a good amount of diversity. Unfortunately what they have to say isn't so unique. The quest structure turns into a grind very quickly and around level 20 the grind gets very slow. You'll find yourself running around to grab any scrap of experience in order to climb the experience ladder. For looks and sound, however, Cabal 2 does some good things, it's just dated so it's all things we've seen before.

Pros

  • Smooth animations
